CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The University of Maryland baseball team stunned No. 15 University of North Carolina on Sunday at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C., defeating them 3-1 in 11 innings. Maryland fought back from a 1-0 deficit to come away with their first extra-inning win of the season.
Junior Sean Kane was solid in his start on the mound for the Terrapins (20-29, 4-17 ACC). Kane allowed just one run on six hits to the Tar Heels (34-12, 13-8 ACC), striking out three batters in six innings of work. UNC's starter, Andrew Miller was also effective in his start, striking out six batters with one run surrendered on five hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
North Carolina broke onto the scoreboard first, scoring one run in the fourth inning. Maryland was able to come back and tie the game at 1-1 by scoring a run of its own in the seventh inning. Junior Truan Mehl led off the inning with a walk and came around to score when sophomore Matt Maropis singled to center field two batters later.
Coming out of the bullpen in the seventh inning, junior Chris Bowen held the Tar Heels scoreless in 2.1 innings of work. Bowen struck out two batters and surrendered just one hit without walking any Carolina players.
Sophomore Brian Jarosinski led off the 11th inning with ground-rule double and moved to third base when junior Jason Maxey singled down the right field line. In the Terps' next at bat, freshman Dan Melvin knocked in Jarosinski with a single up the middle. Two batters later, junior Elliot Singletary brought Melvin around to score with a single down the left field line, giving the Terrapins a 3-1 lead.
Earning his fourth win of the season, sophomore Ben Pfinsgraff capped off a strong bullpen performance for the Terps. Pfinsgraff did not allow any runs andf just three hits in 2.2 innings on the mound.
Melvin led Maryland with three hits in the game. Hart, Maropis and Buffone were the other Terrapins with multiple hits in the game, each picking up a pair of hits.
The Terps will be in action next when they face Duquesne University on Tuesday, May 11, at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Md., for a 4 p.m. game.
