Maryland To Take Part In Pontiac Griffin Challenge

Feb. 16, 2006

MARYLAND HEADS SOUTH FOR SHOWCASE TOURNAMENT

  • The Maryland Terrapins (1-2) continue their season this weekend against Gardner- Webb, No. 26 Winthrop and Evansville at the Griffin Pontiac Challenge in Rock Hill, S.C. from Feb. 17-19. The visit will mark the third straight year in which the Terps have participated in an early season tournament hosted by Winthrop. In February of 2004 and 2005, Maryland took part in Winthrop's Coca Cola Classic.

  • On Friday, the Terps are scheduled to play the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs. The alltime series between the two schools is tied, 1-1, after Gardner-Webb won the last matchup, 2-0, on Feb. 22, 2004. On Saturday, Maryland will play the host Eagles. The Terps have never beaten Winthrop in five tries, including last season, when the Eagles shut out Maryland in Rock Hill, 8-0. In their weekend finale, the Terps will take on Evansville Sunday morning. It will mark the first ever meeting between the programs.

  • All three games this weekend will be broadcast online by WMUC Sports at www.wmucsports.com. Nick Sekkas and Mark Butman will be in the booth doing color and play-by-play for each game. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

    SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
GARDNER-WEBB: This season, the Bulldogs are off to an early 3-0 start after sweeping their opening series against Delaware State. Heading into the weekend, Gardner-Webb has four players batting over .400, including Matt Maloney and Joey Testa who are each hitting .500

WINTHROP: After taking two of three against both Miami and Alabama on the road, the Eagles are ranked 26th in this week's Collegiate Baseball Weekly and NCBWA polls. Winthrop went 44-22 in 2005 and has been picked to win the Big South Conference this year by the league's coaches.

EVANSVILLE: The Purple Aces are 3-0 after a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley State and a 6-3 victory at Lipscomb on Tuesday. In that game, junior Pat Tumilty belted a pair of home runs for the Aces and Jeff Fontaine added a solo blast of his own.
