College Park, Md. -
Seven women and four men were chosen from the Maryland swimming and diving team to the All-ACC Academic team, announced earlier this week. No other team placed as many as seven women on the team.
On the men's side, sophomore Stefan Geisen, a Biological Sciences major, junior Tony Miller, a chemical engineering major, junior Tim Shepard, an accounting major, and senior Erik Putkonen, a finance and logistics major, were named to the team. Miller will be swimming in the World Championship Trials this August. Florida State and North Carolina paced the men's team with seven selections each.
The record seven women named to the team includes junior Sasha Malanina, a finance and international business major, who experienced a breakout season in which she was an All-ACC and All-America Honorable Mention performer, as well as senior Krisztina Kovacs, a family studies and psychology major and a fellow All-ACC and All-America Honorable Mention performer. They are joined by freshman Yelena Skalinska, enrolled in the college of letters and sciences, sophomore Maya Finkler, a biological studies major, senior Inbal Levavi, an environmental studies major, and senior Barbara Sumrall, a finance and logistics major.
This was the first time that the Atlantic Coast Conference named an All-Academic team for swimming and diving.
