Four Terps Named Preseason All-Americans
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Three Maryland women's lacrosse student-athletes have been put on the 2007 Women's Preseason Tewaaraton Watch List. Seniors Becky Clipp and Katie Doolittle and junior Kelly Kasper were all put on the list for the Tewaaraton Award, given annually to the nation's top player.
The list of 34 student-athletes will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of five women who constitute the award's finalists.
Clipp and Kasper were also honored earlier this week as both were named to the Inside Lacrosse Women's Division I preseason All-America Second Team.
Clipp was an IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America Second Team selection after last season. She has started every game the last two seasons for the Maryland defense, causing 54 turnovers and grabbing 103 ground balls in those years. Last season, she forced 31 turnovers, which was second on the team, and picked up a team-best 58 ground balls.
Doolittle was a second-team all-region honoree last year as she was third on the team with 37 goals and 42 points. She was also fifth with 34 ground balls as she picked one up in all but one game. Like Clipp, she has started in every game she has played the last two seasons. Both Clipp and Doolittle will serve as Maryland's captains this year.
Kasper is the Terps' top-returning scorer from 2006 and was also an IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America Second Team selection. Kasper is a force in all aspects of the game as she led Maryland with 27 assists, 62 draw controls, and 42 caused turnovers. She was second on the team with 44 goals and third with 44 ground balls.
Maryland opens the 2007 season on Monday, February 19 when it travels to UMBC for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
