COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Boston College broke open a 7-5 contest with an 11-run outburst to defeat Maryland in the series finale Saturday at Shipley Field, 18-6. The Eagles (12-21-1, 6-12 ACC) opened a 7-1 lead early on the Terrapins (20-18, 6-12), then fought off a Maryland comeback with the scoring barrage starting in the five-run fifth inning.

Reliever Ted Ratliff (3-1) picked up the win, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings. Maryland starter Kevin Biringer (2-7) took the loss after allowing the first three runs of the day in two innings of work.

BC center fielder Peter Frates highlighted the Eagle offense, as he recorded eight RBIs in a 4-for-6 day at the plate, including two home runs. For Maryland, second baseman Steve Braun went 3-for-5 with an RBI. The Eagles out-hit the Terrapins by a 24-12 margin, the most hits allowed this season by Maryland.

Eight different Maryland pitchers saw time on the hill, with junior Brad Taylor having a successful scoreless outing, allowing just two hits in two innings of work.

Both teams scored in the first inning, with Michael Belfiore's two-run blast giving BC an early 2-0 lead. Maryland responded in the bottom half, as AJ Casario induced a bases-loaded error to score Braun.

In the third, Boston College scored five runs to take a 7-1 lead, with run-scoring hits by Joseph Ayers and Frates following up a three-run home run by Eric Campbell.

Maryland responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the gap to three. Sophomore Gerry Spessard's groundout scored the first run of the day, while senior Jon Greenwich and sophomore Mike Moss each notched an RBI with a double and a single, respectively.

In the next inning, Spessard doubled to score Braun, moving the Terps within two runs.

The Terps would advance no further, though, as Boston College scored five runs in the fifth inning. Frates' grand slam, along with an RBI single by Mike Augustine, left the score at 12-5.

BC repeated the feat again in the sixth, with Frates' second round-tripper of the day plating three runs. Tony Sanchez and Augustine doubled and singled, respectively, to add a pair of runs. Belfiore's RBI single in the seventh inning closed out the Eagles' scoring.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Braun's groundout scored pinch hitter Chad Durakis for the Terps' sixth run of the afternoon.

With the loss, Maryland dropped its third-straight ACC series, while Boston College picked up its second ACC series victory of the year.

Maryland will look to bounce back with a pair of midweek games before traveling to Duke next weekend. The Terps make the short trip to UMBC for a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday, then return home to face Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
