COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game series against the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels, 14-1, Saturday evening at Shipley Field.

The Terps (11-10, 2-6 ACC) used eight different pitchers in the game, but the Tar Heels (17-4, 6-2 ACC) were hot at the plate, compiling 18 hits and drawing nine walks against the Maryland hurlers.

North Carolina never trailed in the game, grabbing a 6-0 lead after three innings. The Tar Heels scored five runs in both the third and eighth innings.

Seth Williams homered off Maryland starter Ian Schwalenberg (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) in the top of the second to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.

Carolina then blew the game open in the third. Schwalenberg, who had already thrown over 50 pitches through the first two innings, was pulled after a allowing a single to Tim Federowicz to lead off the third. Kevin Biringer (Albuquerque, N.M./Bradley University) came in for Schwalenberg but allowed two singles, a double and a two-run home run to Dustin Ackley in the inning to put Carolina on top, 6-0.

Maryland's only run came on a sacrifice fly by Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Northwest) in the bottom of the third.

Biringer went three innings, then six pitchers combined to throw the last four innings: Brett Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), Brett Harman (Westminster, Md./Westminster), Tim Kearney (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) and Mike Sufczynski (Darnestown, Md./St. John's). Bryan Hoffman (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made his first appearance of the season and reserve catcher and first baseman Mike Moss (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) made his first career pitching performance, getting the Tar Heels in order in the ninth.

Steve Braun (Granada Hills, Calif./Pierce CC) and Gerry Spessard (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) had two hits apiece for Maryland.

Ackley went 2-for-3 for the Heels with four RBIs.

Maryland will look to take the series at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Pupa will take the mound for the Terps and will be opposed by Matt Harvey.
