NORFOLK, Va. -
Trailing 10-1 entering the ninth inning, the University of Maryland baseball team mounted a furious rally, putting the tying run on deck, but it was too little, too late, as the Terrapins dropped a 10-6 game Tuesday evening at Old Dominion University. It was the first of a two-game home-and-home with the Monarchs this week.
After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the first inning, Maryland starting pitcher Adam Kolarek struggled to get the third out. Gerald Hall legged out an infield single to shortstop and a walk put two runners on with two outs.
Donnie Corsner brought in a run with an RBI single to right field and Brett Harris followed with another RBI single to right field. Joshua Wright then added a perfectly-executed bunt single down the third-base line to bring in the third run of the inning, before Kolarek finally recorded the final out.
Kolarek again struggled to record the final out in the bottom of the third inning. With runners at first and second with two outs, Edgar Hernandez lined an RBI single to left field to put the Monarchs up 4-0. Kolarek was replaced by senior Brett Jones after Hernandez's single, but Jones allowed a two-run triple down the left-field line to Cameron Scott, giving Old Dominion a six-run cushion.
The Monarchs (5-10) scratched across another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead before the Terps got on the board in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single by third baseman Dan Benick.
Old Dominion added three doubles and a pair of singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate three more runs and take a 10-1 lead.
The Terps put together four singles and two walks to plate five runs in the top of the ninth inning. A.J. Casario and Will Greenberg had RBI singles, Mike Moss added a two-run single and Jensen Pupa drew a bases-loaded walk to account for the Maryland scoring.
Sophomore reliever Matt Quinn made his first appearance of the season for the Terps (8-9), returning from injury. Quinn allowed one run in one inning of work.
Freshman Ben Tomchick earned his first career victory for Old Dominion, improving to 1-1. Kolarek was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs in 2 2/3 innings on six hits. Matt Walls earned the save for Old Dominion, retiring the only batters he faced.
Curtis Lazar, Casario and Greenberg each had two hits for the Terps.
Corsner and Scott both went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Monarchs.
The Monarchs and Terps will complete the season series with each other at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Shipley Field in College Park, Md.
