COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Mike Murphy went 3-for-4 with three RBI doubles and the Terrapins' bats delivered a season-high 17 hits as the University of Maryland baseball team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 13-2, Tuesday evening at a rainy Shipley Field.
Murphy had a banner day, reaching multiple milestones. Murphy is the first Maryland player to hit three doubles in a game since Anthony Buffone and Dan Melvin both did so March 10, 2004 against UMBC. Murphy also moved into fifth place on Maryland's all-time doubles list and fourth on the Terps' all-time RBIs list.
The Terps (16-20) got the bats going early against Mountaineers starting pitcher Marshall Thomason, scoring four runs in the first inning. Murphy flicked an RBI double into the right-center field gap to score the first run and A.J. Casario plated Murphy with a triple down the left-field line. First baseman Will Greenberg then doubled the 2-0 Maryland lead with a two-run home run to center field.
Maryland tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to chase Thomason. Second baseman Matthew Murakami drove an RBI double off the left-field wall and Murphy drove in another with his second double to right-center.
The Mountaineers (13-15) plated single runs in the third and fourth inning and the Terps' lead was 7-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Maryland pulled away there, scoring four more times.
Murphy drove in the first run of the inning with his third double, this one down the left-field line. Casario followed with an RBI single and catcher Mike Moss drove in a pair with a sharp double down the third-base line.
A fielding error, one of four Mountaineer errors in the game, allowed two more Maryland runs to score in the seventh.
Freshman Matt Fullerton delivered a solid pitching outing for Maryland, allowing two runs in five innings with a career-high five strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the season. Thomason took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Murakami and Casario joined Murphy with three hits in the game and David Poutier went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Three Maryland pitchers limited the Mountaineers to three hits.
The Terps, who are now 7-0 this season against in-state opponents, faces another Maryland rival Wednesday, traveling to UMBC for a 7 p.m. game.
