CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - With Maryland's bullpen depleted after pitching 7 1/3 innings in Saturday's doubleheader, starter Brett Harman knew he had to give the Terps seven to eight solid innings in order for them to win Sunday.

The junior exceeded those expectations, recording Maryland's first complete game this season and setting a career high with 12 strikeouts as Maryland topped Boston College, 4-2.

Harman broke his previous career high of 10 strikeouts and threw his first complete game since May 8, 2009 against Wake Forest.

Maryland broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning after Alfredo Rodriguez led off with a double down the left-field line. Brandon Padula's single through the left side plated Rodriguez, giving the Terps a 2-1 lead. Matt Marquis and Jack Cleary's back-to-back singles kept the rally alive, with Cleary's knocking in Padula for a 3-1 Maryland advantage.

The Terps got an insurance run in the eighth when Padula crushed a home run over the left-field wall.

That would be more than enough for Harman, who has been outstanding in Atlantic Coast Conference action. In four of his five starts against ACC competition, Harman (4-4) has gone at least seven innings, totaling 34 strikeouts and allowing just five earned runs.

The junior was dominant throughout the day. He struck out the side in the sixth and retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings.

Both of Boston College's runs came on solo home runs - one by Matt Watson in the fifth and one by John Spatola in the sixth.

Marquis had his second consecutive multiple-hit game, going 3-for-4, including an RBI-double in the first inning.

The Terps got out of trouble in the second with a strike-`em-out, throw-`em-out double play. With runners on first and second and no outs, Harman struck out Mike Sudol on a 3-2 pitch, and with the runners going on the play, Cleary threw out John Spatola at third base. Harman recorded the third out of the inning by striking out Anthony Melchionda looking. Through two innings, Harman had four strikeouts.

Maryland improved to 13-21 and 4-11 in ACC play, while Boston College dropped to 15-16 and 6-9 in conference games.

The Terps are next in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Baltimore to take on UMBC at 6 p.m.
