COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Clemson's offense jumped out to an early lead and starting pitcher Casey Harman kept the Terps scoreless through five innings as the Tigers defeated Maryland 18-6 Friday evening.
Clemson's Will Lamb hit the first pitch of the game deep to center field for a double and Mike Freeman hit a hard liner off of Maryland pitcher Brett Harman's throwing arm on the second pitch of the game to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Maryland's Harman, who entered the game second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in innings pitched and fourth in ERA in league outings, stayed in the game but left after four innings, his shortest start of the season.
The Tigers added another run in the first, one more in the second and three more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
Kyle Parked led off the fourth with a double and catcher John Nester later doubled down the left field line as part of the three-run inning.
Gary Schneider went 3-for-4 at the plate for Maryland, his sixth straight multiple-hit game, including a double in the sixth that helped the Terps get on the scoreboard.
Matt Marquis followed with a two-run single up the middle that plated Matthew Murakami and Schneider, but Clemson answered with a seven-run seventh inning that put the game out of reach.
Casey Harman (6-1) went six innings for the Tigers, allowing two runs on six hits to get the win.
Brett Harman (4-8), who allowed five earned runs on six hits, took the loss.
Second baseman David Poutier, who is a senior and is playing in his final home series for Maryland, went 3-for-3, but the Terps were unable to dig out of the early hole.
Clemson improved to 29-17 and 12-10 in the ACC with the win, while Maryland fell to 16-35 and 4-21 in league play.
The Terps and Tigers play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Maryland athletics will dedicate the stadium, named Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, to Bob Smith. Smith is a Maryland baseball alumnus.
