COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
There seemed to be a boost of energy on Maryland's pool deck Saturday and rightfully so, after the women topped Duke and the men just missed an upset bid against the Blue Devils.
The women topped Duke 186-111 while the men slipped 177.50-121.50.
On the women's side, Maryland was led by first-place finishes in the 200 medley (Ginny Glover, Laura Flewelling, Addison Koelle, and Megan Lafferty - 1:42.94) and the 200 free relay (Lafferty, Julia Kudryashova, Carolyn Fittin and Glover - 1:33.12).
Individually, the Terps were stellar as well, with top showings in the 200 free (Fittin - 1:50.91), 200 fly (Koelle - 2:00.81), 50 free (Lafferty - 23.08), 100 free (Fittin - 50.92), 500 free (Cassidy - 4:55.09), 100 fly (Lafferty - 55.36), and 200 IM (Roberts - 2:04.04).
Maryland swept the 200 free with Glover (1:51.17) and Cassidy (1:52.61) following Fittin, the 200 fly as Roberts (2:02.74) and Meggie Schmidt went 2-3 and the 100 fly with second and third place finishes from Koelle (56.01) and Fittin (56.88).
Alisa Kurbatova won the 1-meter dive (301.05).
On the men's side, the Terps started off strong with a great showing in the 200 medley relay (Bradley Dillon, Anderson Sloan, Jeff Winters, John Hauser - 1:31.24) with a mark that would have won yesterday's relay against NC State.
The Terps took that momentum into their individual races and scooped a flurry of first-place performances from Alex Spina (1650 free - 16:10.84), Hauser (200 free - 1:40.19, 200 IM - 1:52.23), Dillon (100 back - 50.44), Sean Stewart (200 fly - 1:50.41), Andrew Relihan (200 back - 1:49.87), Winters (100 fly - 50.04)
"It was great to see our guys team react today in a way I haven't seen in three years," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "That was really special. They just came together. They did a really good job last night and they had a choice to make and they came in here today even better. The excitement and focus was great all the way through. We won a lot of close races.
"We got some good markers on the women's side for where we are right now. We stacked that up with two really good wins in the ACC. We are off to very good start there."
Maryland heads to North Carolina Nov. 5 for its next conference test.
