CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
Maryland surrendered a two-run lead for the second time Saturday as No. 3 Virginia scored four runs in the second inning to sweep a doubleheader from the Terps with a 4-2 game-two win.
The Terps scored single runs in each of the first two innings but the Cavaliers (24-2, 8-1) responded with four runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman in the bottom half of the second to take the lead.
Terrapin starting pitcher Eric Potter was pulled with two outs in the second inning after giving up a RBI single to Mitchell Shifflett, a two-run triple to Chris Taylor and a walk to John Barr. Freshman Brady Kirkpatrick threw two wild pitches after replacing Potter, with Taylor scoring on the second one, for a 4-2 Virginia lead.
That lead would be enough, as Virginia pitcher Cody Winiarski kept Maryland hitless over his final four innings, retiring the side in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh.
Like they did in game one of the doubleheader, the Terrapins (11-13, 1-8) got off to a good start. Freshman right fielder Charlie White again led off the game with a base-hit, this time a double to right-center field. Alfredo Rodriguez moved White to third on a sacrifice bunt and Ryan Holland's sacrifice fly brought him home for a 1-0 lead.
Freshman third baseman Kyle Convissar singled up the middle to leadoff the second and later reached third on junior first baseman Tomo Delp's infield single. With two out and runners on the corners, designated hitter Jack Cleary singled to center field to score Convissar for a 2-0 Terrapin lead.
Besides the two wild pitches enabling a Virginia run, Kirkpatrick pitched well, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing only three hits. Michael Boyden pitched another 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to keep Maryland close, but the Terps couldn't close the gap.
Maryland's best chance to tie it came when Rodriguez singled with two outs in the eighth, Holland walked and both got into scoring position on a wild pitch; but Virginia reliever Justin Thompson struck out pinch-hitter Tim Kiene to end the inning.
Winiarski (3-1) earned the win, striking out five and allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings. Potter (2-3) was charged with all four Virginia runs in 1 2/3 innings and took the loss.
The Terps return to action on Wednesday, when they face George Mason at 7 p.m. in College Park.
