CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
No. 3 Virginia scored three unearned runs in the eighth inning to spoil a splendid outing by Maryland pitcher David Carroll and the Cavaliers beat the Terps 4-2 in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Carroll kept Virginia (23-2, 7-1) scoreless for six innings before allowing a run in the seventh and giving way to closer Korey Wacker in the eighth. The Terps recorded the first two outs in the inning on wonderful plays by third baseman Tomo Delp, but back-to-back errors by shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez and Delp opened the door for Virginia.
With two on, Virginia's Steven Proscia singled to left field to score John Hicks and tie the game at 2-2. Kenny Swab and pinch-hitter Jared King followed with two more RBI singles as the Cavaliers took a 4-2 lead. Wacker struck out Reed Gragnani to end the inning, but Maryland was unable to rally in the ninth.
The Terps had built a 2-0 lead and carried it into the seventh innings on the strength of Carroll's pitching and the defense behind him. A junior right-hander, Carroll recorded 16 consecutive outs between the second and seventh innings. He struck out just two during that stretch, pitching to contact and letting Maryland's defense make plays.
Carroll needed just 59 pitches to get through six innings and retired two in the seventh before surrendering a double to Proscia. With two outs, Kenny Swab drew a walk and David Coleman singled to left field to score Proscia and bring Virginia within a run.
Maryland (11-12, 1-7) scored single runs in the first and third innings to take the 2-0 lead. Charlie White led off the game with an infield single and later scored when Ryan Holland hit a grounder to shortstop that Virginia's Chris Taylor couldn't handle.
In the third, Alex Ramsay led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by White and after an Alfredo Rodriguez groundout got him to third, scored on Holland's single up the middle.
But the Terps had just two hits after the third and couldn't provide any additional run support.
Virginia reliever Kyle Crockett (2-0) pitched 2/3 of an inning and was credited with the win. Branden Kline pitched the ninth to earn the save (9). Wacker (1-1) suffered the loss.
