COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
David Carroll pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs, Jack Cleary and Jake Stinnett each drove in a pair of runs and Maryland beat Canisius 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Carroll allowed just three hits and kept Canisius scoreless through six innings. The junior from Las Vegas allowed two runs in the seventh, but Maryland had a comfortable lead by that point after scoring a pair of runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings.
Freshman outfielder Charlie White led off the Maryland second inning with a double down the left-field line and then swiped third base for the Terrapins' fourth steal of the game. A batter later, catcher Jack Cleary doubled down the right-field line for a 1-0 lead. Korey Wacker knocked in Cleary with Maryland's third double of the inning, this time to left-center.
The Terps (6-4) doubled their lead in the fifth. Ryan Holland drew a leadoff walk and Stinnett, who was pinch-hitting, doubled down the right-field line, bringing Holland all the way around from first to score. Stinnett was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. Maryland's next two batters reached base via a walk and a hit-by-pitch and Cleary followed with his second RBI hit of the day, this time a single to left field, for a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth Maryland loaded the bases as Wacker drew a leadoff walk, Tomo Delp and Holland singled. Wacker scored on a Gary Schneider groundout and Stinnett singled through the left side to bring in Holland for a 6-0 lead.
Charlie Haslup came on in relief of Carroll in the eighth and pitched two perfect innings, retiring all six batters he faced. The sophomore right-hander hasn't allowed a run in five innings of relief this season.
Canisius starter Chris Cox (0-3) gave up two runs on three hits in 2 1/3 and took the loss as the Griffins fell to 4-5.
