COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Eric Potter, Blair Delean and Jeff Crosswhite combined for a three-hit shutout and Maryland used a balanced offensive attack combined with aggressive base-running to defeat Delaware State 8-0 Tuesday night.
The Terps (16-17) tied a season-high with six stolen bases and scored their first run when Tomo Delp came all the way around from first on a Curtis Lazar single to the gap in right-center field. Maryland added three runs in the third, then two more in the sixth and seventh innings while the pitching shut down the Hornets (15-17).
Potter (3-4) allowed three hits in five innings while striking out four before giving way to Delean and Crosswhite, who combined allowed just one base-runner over the final four innings. It was the first appearance in a Maryland uniform for Crosswhite, a redshirt freshman from Dayton, Md., that had Tommy John Surgery last year. He retired all six batters he faced, including two strike outs.
Seven different Terps drove in a run and six had at least one hit, with junior Ryan Holland and freshman Michael Montville each contributing two base knocks.
Leading 1-0 in the third, Maryland loaded the bases with no outs and used an Austin Kilbourne walk and sacrifice flies by Tim Kiene and Curtis Lazar to stretch the lead to 4-0.
In the seventh, Alfredo Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and then stole second to get into scoring position, and Holland knocked him in with one of his two base hits. Holland then stole second and Montville drove a 3-2 pitch into right field for a 6-0 Maryland advantage.
Charlie White drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh and Rodriguez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.
The Terps have won 12 of their last 14 non-conference games.
Maryland travels to James Madison on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup. RHP Sander Beck (2-3, 4.95) will start for Maryland, while RHP Nick Slogik (3-1, 6.08) gets the nod for the Dukes.
