HARRISONBURG, Va. -
David Herbek and Alex Foltz hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the 12th inning and James Madison got a walk-off win over Maryland, 13-12, on Wednesday night.
The Terps had rallied from an eight-run deficit to take a 10-9 lead in the top of the seventh, but the Dukes responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 12-10. Maryland again rallied to tie it in the eighth on Jake Stinnett's two-run homer and after one and a half scoreless innings the game went to extras.
After two scoreless innings, Maryland looked to be in position to retake the lead in the top of the 12th, with Ryan Holland and Jordan Hagel reaching scoring position after a walk, a single and a passed ball. But James Madison pitcher D.J. Brown struck out Austin Kilbourne and Tomo Delp to get out of the jam, and the Dukes quickly scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Brown (5-0), who allowed just one hit and struck out seven in four innings of relief, earned the win. Korey Wacker (2-2), who started in center field and moved to the mound in the ninth, took the loss.
The Terps had trailed 9-1 heading into the sixth, but erased the deficit quickly with 10 hits that yielded nine runs over the next two innings.
Holland started the Maryland rally with a leadoff single in the sixth. Michael Montville followed with a run-scoring triple, Kilbourne doubled and three batters later Aaron Etchison homered to left-center field to bring the Terps within four runs.
The Terps (16-18) took the lead with a five-run seventh inning, scoring all of their runs with two outs. Kilbourne started the two-out rally with a single to left field - his third hit of the game - before Tim Kiene and Stinnett drew walks to load the bases. Maryland then reeled off four straight hits by Etchison, Wacker, Charlie White and Alfredo Rodriguez to take a 10-9 lead.
The Dukes (22-11), however, took advantage of three straight walks to open the bottom half of the seventh and tied it at 10-10 on Jake Lowery's sacrifice fly to center field. With runners on the corners a batter later, Herbek singled to center and James Madison retook the lead. Matt Tenaglia drove in the third run of the inning with a groundout to first base.
Earlier, James Madison's Johnny Bladel hit a leadoff home run in the first to give the Dukes a quick lead, and they added three unearned runs in the second after Maryland committed an error with two outs that should have ended the inning.
Kilbourne hit an opposite-field home run in the fourth to make it 4-1, but JMU got the run back in the bottom of the inning on Herbek's run-scoring triple. Lowery's bases-loaded triple in the fifth capped a four-run inning that gave the Dukes a 9-1 lead.
Maryland had a season-high 16 hits in the game and every Terp starter had at least one hit. Kilbourne and Kiene had three hits apiece, while Stinnett, Wacker and Etchison had two.
James Madison, which leads the nation in runs scored, was led by Herbek's 4-for-7, four-RBI performance. Bladel went 3-for-5 and scored five runs.
The Terps return home to play host to Miami this weekend. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
