COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Miami center fielder Nathan Melendres went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, Bryan Radziewski allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings on the mound and Miami beat Maryland 10-4 on Friday night.

Rony Rodriguez also had three hits for the Hurricanes (23-11, 12-3) and eight Miami starters had at least one hit. The Canes, who never trailed, broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in a third inning that was a microcosm of the game for Maryland (16-19, 3-13).

Chris Mack led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Melendres. Rodriguez followed with a pop-fly into shallow left field, but the ball was lost in the lights by left fielder Austin Kilbourne and fell for a double.

The Terps got the second out of the inning when Miami's Harold Martinez grounded into a fielder's choice that put out Mack between third base and home, but Maryland pitcher David Carroll then issued back-to-back walks to force in a run. With the bases loaded, David Villasuso singled to center field to drive in a pair of runs for a 4-1 Miami lead.

Carroll, who logged at least seven innings in five of his eight starts prior to Friday, lasted just 5 1/3 against the Canes. The junior allowed six runs on eight hits and eight walks and fell to 5-3 on the season with the loss.

Radziewski (6-2), a freshman, spread out eight hits and struck out six while walking two to earn the win. Right-handers Travis Miller and Javi Salas came on in relief and held Maryland to one hit over the final 2 1/3.

The Terps scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings, staying close for much of the game, but were unable to come through with a multi-run inning.

In addition to Rodriguez's three hits, freshman Charlie White and junior Ryan Holland had two apiece, but the Terps left nine runners on base - including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh when they trailed 7-4.

Miami scored a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday. The weather forecast, however, calls for heavy rain in the College Park area most of the day. Any changes in the schedule will be posted to umterps.com.
