COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Steve Rice gave Towson early momentum with a two-run double in the first inning, the Tigers notched runs in five of the first six frames and held off Maryland late for a 10-6 victory Tuesday night.
The Tigers put up a three-spot in the second inning for a 5-0 lead, and though the Terps got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, Towson added five runs over the next four innings.
Towson starting pitcher Tyler Bunga, meanwhile, held Maryland to a run through four innings while the offense built a healthy lead. Center fielder Ben Winter had a team-best three hits, Rice and third baseman Chris Wychock had two hits and two RBI apiece, and shortstop Nick Natoli also added a pair of hits.
Maryland was led by center fielder Korey Wacker's two-hit, two-RBI day, with first baseman Tim Kiene adding a pair of hits, a run and a RBI.
The Terps, however, were unable to put up a multiple-run inning until the fifth, when Bunga was lifted from the game after issuing back-to-back walks to designated hitter Curtis Lazar and Wacker. Second baseman Ryan Holland later drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Wacker scored on a balk and Kiene ripped a RBI single through the right side for the third run of the inning, but Maryland still trailed 8-4.
After Towson put up a couple of runs in the sixth to make it 10-4, Maryland responded with a pair of its own on a two-run single by Wacker in the bottom of the inning. Towson reliever Tyler Austin came in and effectively shut the door after that, pitching 2 2/3 innings and retiring every batter he faced.
Towson (21-21-1) reliever Christian Duclos (1-1) was credited with the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Maryland starter Blair Delean (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on four hits in 1 1/3.
The Terps will look for a season split with the Tigers when the teams meet tomorrow at Towson. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
