Four Maryland pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts while holding Delaware to four hits and the Terps won their ninth straight with a 2-0 victory over the Blue Hens Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Michael Boyden, making his first start of the season, struck out a career-high nine in five innings, and relievers Charlie Haslup, Korey Wacker and Jimmy Reed shut down Delaware the rest of the way.
Boyden (2-0) cruised through the first four frames, striking out the side in the second and setting down two by way of strikeout in the third and the fourth. Between a one-out walk in the first inning and another in the fifth, Boyden retired 12 in a row.
Delaware (5-7) didn't record its first hit until there were two outs in the fifth, marking the second game in a row a Maryland pitcher took a no-hitter that deep in the game. Brett Harman also did it on Sunday against Manhattan.
Haslup came on to pitch the sixth, Wacker pitched 1 2/3 innings and Jimmy Reed earned his fourth save of the season by pitching 1 1/3, retiring all four batters he faced.
After getting its second straight shutout and third overall this season, Maryland's team ERA sits at 0.86. They're the only team in NCAA Division I with a team ERA under 1.00.
Michael Montville was the lone Terp to have a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3, and he scored both of Maryland's runs.
The Terps (10-1) got their first run in the second inning, after Montville doubled to right-center field and later scored on a RBI groundout by K.J. Hockaday.
Delaware threatened for the first time in the fifth, when it put runners on first and second with two outs after a walk and a single. Blue Hen catcher Ty Warrington then hit a hard liner to left field that would have scored at least one, but Matt Bosse charged in and made a diving catch to end the inning.
It wasn't the only outstanding defensive play of the day for Maryland. With two down and a man on in the sixth, Delaware's Alex Maruri hit a slow roller to shortstop, and Alfredo Rodriguez charged in, made a bare-handed grab and threw off balance to first for the out.
The Blue Hens threatened again in the eighth, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Reed struck out left fielder Tyler Powell to end the inning.
Maryland then added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez that plated Montville.
The Terps travel to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy Wednesday at 2 p.m., before embarking on a trip to Wake Forest to open Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend. RHP Sander Beck (1-0, 1.50) will face Navy's RHP Stephen Moore (0-0, 1.35) on Wednesday.
