Red Defeats Black in Season Kickoff

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Spencer Myers scored a first period fall over freshman Sean Twigg to give the Red team a 22-16 victory over the Black team in the Red & Black Wrestle-Offs at Comcast Pavilion Sunday afternoon. The event served at the kickoff to the 2013-14 wrestling season and the results will help determine the Terps lineup for next week's Terrapin duals.

Seniors Jimmy Sheptock and Christian Boley traded major decision victories at 184 and 197 before Myers broke the tie in the final match of the event.

Sophomore Paul O'Neill put the Red team in front with a 5-2 decision over sophomore Billy Rappo at 125 pounds. Junior Geoffrey Alexander and sophomore Shyheim Brown extended the Red team's lead with decision wins. Alexander defeated freshman Tyler Goodwin at 133 while Brown got past junior Shane Arechiga at 141.

Senior Frank Goodwin grabbed a 7-0 decision win victory against Derrick Evanovich at 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, senior Ben Dorsay pushed the Red team's advantage with a win over senior Daniel Orem. Sophomore Josh Snook snuck past sophomore Tyler Manion at 165 pounds.

Senior Tony Gardner tied the score for the Black team in the 174 pound bout, beating senior Ty Snook by injury default after the senior was deemed unable to continue.

Sheptock gave the Black team its first lead of the day, scoring a 14-1 major decision win over sophomore Chris Jastrzebski. Boley matched his fellow captain with a 17-4 major decision over sophomore Dylan Devine.

Myers then sealed the victory for the Red squad, scoring a fall against Twigg.

“It was good to see them in action,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “We still have areas we need to get better in, but that's just the nature of it. It's October. We don't want to be the best right now. We want to continue to improve. We'll build off this and get ready for next week.”

The Terps officially begin their season next week at the Terrapin Duals. Maryland will take on Johns Hopkins, Kutztown and Alderson-Broaddus beginning at 11 a.m at Comcast Pavilion.
