With the regular season in summer wooden-bat leagues well underway, it's time to check in on several Terps making an impact for their respective teams. Throughout the summer, we will keep you updated on how the Terps are faring, along with news from the minors and MLB.
Former Terrapin Brett Cecil ('07) takes center stage in today's edition. Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies, Cecil completed a perfect seventh inning in the Toronto Blue Jays' 5-2 win to become the club's record holder in batters faced without allowing a hit surpassing David Cone (36; June 11-17, 1995). Cecil has faced 38 batters without allowing a hit dating back to May 28.
Cecil also ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 17-2/3, which entering Wednesday night's game was the third longest active streak in the American League.
Also of note, from May 31 through June 17, Cecil retired 25 straight batters, which is tied for the second-longest streak in club history. Dave Steib retired 26 straight in 1989.
Cecil has excelled out of the bullpen this season for the Jays. In 32 appearances, Cecil is 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA and sports a 0.73 WHIP. In 37 innings, he has held opposing hitters to a .137 average and has 42 strikeouts.
Finally, before getting into summer ball, congratulations are in order for Jimmy Reed who made his professional debut on Wednesday night for the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League. There is more on how he fared a little later.
Cape Cod League
• Jake Stinnett made his debut for the Brewster Whitecaps on Saturday against the Chatham Anglers. In his first start, Stinnett was in control pitching five scoreless innings and holding the Anglers to just two hits while striking out six.
Stinnett exited with a 3-0 lead, but the bullpen was unable to hold it and he had to settle for a no-decision.
Cal Ripken League
• With 11 games under his belt, rising sophomore LaMonte Wade is tied for 10th in batting average in the CRCBL. Wade is hitting .333 (13 for 39), which is second on the Baltimore Redbirds, with 10 RBI and one home run. His RBI total ranks second in the league and he is tied for fourth in homers.
Wade hit his first home run of the summer in a 7-6 defeat to Bethesda Big Train Friday. The home run was a three-run shot that put the Redbirds up 6-5 at the time.
• Brandon Casas and Robert Galligan, also playing for the Redbirds, are off to strong starts this summer, as well. In two appearances, Casas has yet to surrender a run in seven innings and has struck out five. Galligan has given up one earned run over six innings with six Ks.
• Zach Morris, who redshirted last season after transferring from Cincinnati, is second in the league with 17 strikeouts pitching for Bethesda Big Train. Against the Presstman Cardinals on June 15, Morris struck out 11 over 9-2/3 innings. Last night, Morris held the Rockville Express to one run on six hits over six innings for his first win of the summer.
• Bobby Ruse continues the strong pitching trend for the Terps in the CRCBL. Ruse has not surrendered a run in 6-2/3 innings encompassing three appearances. Ruse also has 10 strikeouts for Youse's Orioles.
New England Collegiate League
• Anthony Papio leads the Sanford Mariners with seven RBI in nine games. Papio is hitting .281 for the squad while playing center field. He has also added three stolen bases.
Northwoods League
• After stealing a single-season school record 39 bases this spring, Charlie White has picked up where he left off. White has 10 stolen bases in 19 games for the Eau Claire Express, which is tied for the seventh-highest total in the league.
White is hitting .288 with 15 runs scored.
Coastal Plains League
• In 16 games for the Wilmington Sharks, Andrew Amaro has scored a team-best 11 runs and is hitting .281, which ranks third on the squad. Amaro is also tied for the team lead in stolen bases with five.
Around The Minors
• Recent St. Louis Cardinals draftee Jimmy Reed ('13) made his professional debut on Wednesday for the State College Spikes in the New York-Penn League. Reed gave up no earned runs and struck out two in two innings of work against the Williamsport Crosscutters.
• After pitching in Aberdeen last season,
Sander Beck ('12) has advanced to the Class A South Atlantic League with the Delmarva Shorebirds. Beck has made three relief appearances and has not surrendered a run in 3-1/3 innings.
