UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Sophomore Tyler Goodwin took third in the 133-pound bracket as the Maryland wrestling team boasted five placers at the 2014 Nittany Lion Open Sunday afternoon.
Goodwin, an NCAA qualifier at the weight last season, recorded four pins on his way to a podium finish. Freshman Adam Whitesell finished eighth behind Goodwin while Derrick Evanovich (157, 4th), Toby Hague (157, 7th) and Garrett Wesneski (197, 8th) also placed.
In his first competition of the season, Goodwin earned successive pins over West Virginia's Christian Monserrat and Lock Haven's Cody Wheeler. The sophomore fell in the semifinals before pinning Monserrat and Wheeler once again to claim third.
Whitesell lost his first round contest before picking up two wins to finish eighth. Evanovich made a great run through the consolation bracket, winning five bouts after falling in the first round to ultimately finish fourth. Hague captured his first round contest and beat Virginia Tech's Jake Spengler in the seventh-place bout to finish in that spot.
Wesneski, who has been a consistent performer in open competition so far this season, also appeared in a seventh-place match, but fell to Tristan Sponseller of Lock Haven.
