BEL AIR, Md. – For the second consecutive day the Maryland baseball team received an outstanding performance from its starting pitcher, this time it was Jake Drossner on the mound. The sophomore lefty scattered three hits over six shutout innings in the Terps' 6-0 win over UMBC Wednesday afternoon at Harford Baseball Field.

Drossner's six-inning outing was a season high and he recorded five strikeouts, tying a season best. The Richboro, Pa., native only faced three batters over the minimum (21) and retired 11 straight Retrievers (3-9) between the second and fifth innings.

The Terps (13-6) finished with eight hits from seven different players led by centerfielder Charlie White, who finished with two knocks, a RBI and four stolen bases, which tied the record he set against Oakland (2/22/13) last season. Over the last 10 games, White is batting .300, tied with Kyle Convissar for the best average on the squad, with six RBI and six stolen bases.

Jose Cuas hit his second home run of the season on Wednesday and finished 1-for-3. Cuas has a team-best seven RBI over the last 10 contests. Convissar, Anthony Papio and Blake Schmit each had a RBI.

Cuas opened the scoring for the Terps in the bottom of the second. With Mike Rescigno standing on second, Cuas drove a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field for his second homer of the year and third of his career.

In the seventh, Maryland increased its lead to five with three runs in the frame. After a bunt single by White allowed Krysthian Leal to advance to third on an error, LaMonte Wade drew a walk to load the bases. With the bases full, UMBC forced in a run by hitting Convissar.

After a sacrifice fly from Schmit scored White, Papio singled to center to score Wade from second to give Maryland a 5-0 advantage.

The Terps added a run in the eighth after a Michael Montville leadoff double. Montville came in to score on a fielder's choice RBI from White.

Maryland received three perfect innings of relief from Jared Price, Alex Robinson and Kevin Mooney. Price struck out two UMBC batters in the seventh. Robinson fanned one in the eighth and Mooney threw only 11 pitches in retiring UMBC in order in the ninth.

Drossner earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. Denis Mikush took the loss for UMBC and is now 0-1.

Maryland opens a three-game homestand against No. 11 NC State Friday at 6:30 p.m. Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday with the finale set for Sunday at 1 p.m. from Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
