COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 68 Maryland women's tennis team began its 2015 spring season with a 4-0 victory over No. 61 Georgia State at the ITA Season Kickoff in Gainesville, Fla. Saturday.
Maryland (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) did not lose a match against the Panthers, sweeping two doubles and three singles matches.
“It was the best match performance I've seen from this team,” head coach Daria Panova said. “Everyone fought their hardest and supported each other. I could not be more proud of them.”
In doubles, all three matches were needed to decide the point. The pair of Welma Luus and Nataliya Bredikhina won over Georgia State's No. 40 Tarani Kamoe and Linn Timmermann, 6-3, to put the Terps on the board. In the second match, Olivia Gaudreault and Alexandra Stanova fell to Niri Rasolomalala and Kristen Rehse, 6-4.
The last match saw Ekaterina Tour and Kristina Hovsepyan clinch the double point with a 6-2 victory over Masa Grgan and Veronika Golanova,.
In singles, Stanova defeated No. 102 Rasolomalala, 6-1, 6-1. Bredikhina won her match against Linn No. 69 Timmermann, 6-4, 6-3. Luus won the last match over Georgia's Veronika Golanova, 6-4,6-0, to give the Terps the win.
Maryland will continue play in Gainesville, Fla. against No. 2 Florida Sunday at 2 p.m.
