GymTerps Head West For Dual With Hawkeyes

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland gymnastics team is back in action Friday, as they head to Iowa City for a dual-meet against the Iowa Hawkeyes at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT) in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Terps (1-3, 1-1 B1G) look to get back in the win column after posting a season-high team total in a 194.450-196.550 loss to then-ranked #13 Penn State.

Improving every meet, Maryland will look to pick up its first road victory of the season. The GymTerps have tallied above a 194.000 in two consecutive meets, bringing the season average up to 193.933.

Against Penn State the team earned a team total of 48.700 or above on vault (49.000), bars (48.850) and floor (48.700). The Terps recorded a season-high team score on both vault and bars.

Freshman Abbie Epperson turned in a career day against the Nittany Lions, tallying personal bests on both vault (9.850) and bars (9.825), while Junior Kathy Tang also cashed in a strong performance on vault (9.825), bars (9.800) and floor (9.750). Senior Stephanie Giameo added a 9.850 on beam, while senior Katy Dodds added a 9.850 on vault, 9.700 on bars and 9.650 on floor.

  • The Terps fell to #13 Penn State on the road, 194.450-196.550. The Terps set a season-high team total score of 194.450, vault (49.000) and bars (48.850).

Scouting the Hawkeyes

  • The GymHawks are coming off a 195.225-196.200 loss to #20 Ohio State. A total of four Hawkeyes set personal bests during the meet. 
  • Iowa was led by senior Sydney Hoerr who won the all-around title with a score of 39.125. Sophomore Angela Metcalf won both beam and bars with a pair of 9.900.
  • Currently, Iowa is ranked 16th nationally on bars and ninth nationally on floor.

Maryland vs. Iowa

  • Friday's meet marks the fifth head-to-head and first conference meeting between the Terrapins and the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes currently hold a 3-1 series edge over the Terps.
  • The Terps last faced Iowa on February 28, 2009 in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes edged the Terps 194.875-192.175.

GymTerps Nationally Ranked on Vault and Floor

  • Maryland currently ranks 12th in the nation and fourth in the Big Ten on floor. The team tallied a season-high team score of 49.100 vs. GW and WVU (1/8). The Terps have broken the 49.000 mark two out of three meets this season.
  • The GymTerps also currently rank tied for 18th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten on vault. The team recorded a season-high team score of 49.000 vs. #13 Penn State (1/24).

Beam me up, Stephy

  • Senior Stephanie Giameo currently ranks tied for 14th nationally and fourth in the Big Ten on beam. Giameo tallied a season-high score of 9.875 vs. GW and WVU (1/8).
  • Giameo anchored the Terps on beam vs. Penn State (1/24) recording a 9.850 and placing tied for third individually on the event.

The 'B1G' 4-0

  • The 2015 campaign marks the 40th season of gymnastics at the University of Maryland. Prior to the season, Maryland gymnastics held a program record of 604-519-6 with a 95-80 conference mark over the 40-year tenure.
  • The season also marks the Terps inaugural season in the Big Ten conference.
