Terps Defeat Davidson at Terrapin Duals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland wrestling team trounced Davidson, 40-3, at the sixth annual Terrapin Duals at XFINITY Center Sunday afternoon.

The Terrapins also faced Pittsburgh and Buffalo, dropping close duals in both contests. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Goodwin starred throughout the afternoon with three wins.

“We've got to get better,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “Pittsburgh and Buffalo are good teams and we weren't as good as we anticipated. Good to finish on a high note with a win. We've got some stuff to build off of and we've got some time to do it.”

Maryland vs. Davidson

In a rematch from last season's Terrapin Duals, the Terps won 9-of-10 matches en route to a 40-3 romp over the Wildcats in the last dual of the day.

At 125 pounds, Jhared Simmons started Maryland off strong, using a solid first period to take a lead he wouldn't relinquish in a 9-6 victory. Goodwin won his third match of the afternoon, taking out Dustin Runzo, 6-1.

Redshirt junior Billy Rappo filled in for Alfred Bannister and was dominant for notching a fall at 2:31. After the Wildcats forfeited at 149, Tony Polumbo put the away team on the board with an 8-4 win over redshirt freshman Patrick Gerish.

Davidson also forfeited at 165 pounds before Derrick Evanovich picked up a 7-1 win over Nathanael Powers. Mark Colabucci followed with a decision win at 184 pounds before Sean Twigg pinned Ryan Devlin in just 35 seconds at 197.

Redshirt sophomore Dawson Peck outlasted Will Cooley by 9-0 major decision to finish off the victory for the Terps.

Maryland vs. Pittsburgh

In the first contest of the day, Maryland led for most of the match before falling to Pittsburgh, 16-15.

Simmons began proceedings with a match against LJ Bentley. After a tight opening period, Bentley pulled away for a 16-5 major decision.

The Terps responded with four consecutive victories, beginning with a sensational first period from Goodwin at 133. Taking on Dom Forys, the Maryland native utilized his outstanding throws to scores multiple near falls and eventually held 15-6 advantage after one period. Goodwin survived a furious comeback from Forys to win 24-23.

In his first home match, Alfred Bannister rose to the occasion and defeated ACC champion Mikey Racciato, 9-5. A couple of takedowns in the first period gave the La Plata native a 4-2 lead after one. Bannister secured the victory with a huge takedown late in the third period.

True freshman Wade Hodges followed with some fantastic work on top in the third period to finish off a 4-1 over Robert Lee at 149 pounds. Returning NCAA qualifier Lou Mascola gave the Terps a 12-4 team lead with a 6-3 over Ronnie Garbinsky.

The Panthers ended the Maryland run through Cody Wiercioch's 3-2 decision over Tyler Manion at 165 pounds. Te'Shan Campbell drew Pittsburgh closer with a 6-0 decision victory against Evanovich.

Colabucci put together a solid performance to win at 184 pounds to put the Terps up 15-10 with two matches left. After Nick Bonaccorsi edged Garrett Wesneski at 197, Ryan Solomon clinched the dual for Pitt with a two-point victory against Dawson Peck.

Maryland vs. Buffalo
