LANCASTER, Pa. – Redshirt freshmen Ryan Diehl (149) and true freshman David-Brian Whisler (184) won their respective brackets at the Dave H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open on Wednesday. The event featured Division I wrestlers from around the surrounding region and beyond, and the Terrapins posted a 56-33 overall record on the day.
Diehl went undefeated at the tournament in his best competition day of the season, posting two pins, a major decision and two decisions for a 5-0 mark. The Berkeley Springs, W.V. native started his day with a fall over Alex Rinehart (Virginia Militia) at 2:05, then followed it up with a 6-1 decision against Sharron Townsend (F&M).
In the quarterfinals, Diehl pinned Chad Hargele (Kutztown) at 4:58, then knocked off Thomas Dutton (Harvard) in the semis by major decision, 12-4. He sealed the 149-pound championship with a win over Cole Moseley (American) to improve to 9-4 on the season.
Whisler went 3-0 in his first action of the 2015-16 season, going undefeated to claim the 184-pound crown. He started with a 13-3 major decision over Joe Salvi (American), then picked up a 5-1 decision vs. Austin Pfarr (Brown) to advance to the title match. It was a close one in the final, but Whisler came away with the win on a 5-3 sudden victory against Michael Mocco (Harvard).
Redshirt freshman Adam Whitesell (141) had a solid day, going 4-1 for a third place finish. The Silver Spring, Md. native posted two pins, including one in his final victory over Patrick Quinlan (F&M), in addition to a major decision and a decision. Fellow redshirt freshman Patrick Gerish started the day off with three consecutive victories, before ultimately going 3-2 on the afternoon.
Redshirt freshman Michael Beck (125) also secured a top three finish for the Terps finsihing third in the 125 pound bracket.
The Maryland wrestling program will return to competition on Friday, January 8 when the team travels to face Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
