COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Redshirt junior Lou Mascola notched a win over No. 15 Michael Kelly at 157 pounds, but the Maryland wrestling team dropped its match to No. 1 Iowa, 33-3, in front of 2,139 spectators at the XFINITY Center Friday night.
The Terps (5-13, 0-7) wrestled a number of tough matches against the Hawkeyes, but ultimately fell short. Mascola's match was tightly contested throughout, but the New Jersey native was able to secure a third period reversal to take the match.
"We had the No. 1 team in the country in our gym and I don't think we backed down," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "We put up a good fight and we were close in a couple matches. Our guys fought hard."
The dual started at 141 pounds with sophomore Shyheim Brown taking on No. 5 Josh Dzeiwa. Brown was the more aggressive competitor in all three periods until Dziewa secured a takedown late in the first sudden victory period to pick up a 3-1 win.
After a No. 2 Brandon Sorenson major decision for Iowa at 149 pounds, Mascola fired up the XFINITY Center crowd with a solid performance against Kelly. Mascola picked up a first period takedown in a tight scramble to take the lead and sealed the match in the third with a reversal.
Iowa picked up six team points after Tyler Manion forfeited due to injury at 165 pounds. At 174, No. 2 Mike Evans defeated junior Josh Snook by major decision before No. 8 Sammy Brooks beat senior Tony Gardner, 19-8.
Senior Rob Fitzgerald was close on a number of takedowns but ultimately fell to Kris Klapprodt, 9-3. A battle of All-American heavyweights saw Iowa's No. 2 Bobby Telford get the better of senior No. 13 Spencer Myers, 3-0.
At 125 pounds, No. 5 Thomas Gilman took out redshirt junior Josh Polacek by major decision to make the team score 30-3. Redshirt junior No. 20 Geoffrey Alexander's late surge was not enough as he fell to No. 5 Cory Clark, 7-5, at 133 pounds to finish off the dual.
The Terps return to action for Senior Day against No. 3 Minnesota. Action is scheduled to begin from the XFINITY Center Pavilion at 1 p.m.
