GymTerps Take Ann Arbor For B1G Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland gymnastics team heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in its first Big Ten Championship on Saturday. After tallying a 194.875 in the B1G Five qualifying meet last weekend, the GymTerps will compete in the morning session at 11:30 a.m. ET. The meet will take place in the Crisler Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Rutgers, Iowa and Michigan State will join the Terps in the morning session, while Ohio State, Illinois, Penn State, Nebraska and host Michigan will face off in the evening session. The team with the highest team score between both sessions will be crowned Big Ten Champions.

Last time out

  • Last time out, the Terps competed in the B1G Five qualifying meet in Lincoln, Nebraska. Maryland was joined by host Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan State.
  • The Terps totaled a team score of 194.875. Maryland showed strong on vault (48.950), bars (48.675), beam (48.750) and floor (48.500). The team placed fifth in the meet and earned a spot in the morning session of the Big Ten Championships.
  • Shannon Skochko placed fifth individually on vault (9.850), while Leah Slobodin set a personal-record on beam (9.825).

The Opponents

  • Maryland has faced Rutgers and Iowa this season. The team defeated Rutgers twice, while narrowly falling to Iowa, in Iowa City.
  • Iowa currently ranks 24th nationally, while Michigan State ranks 28th.
  • Both Rutgers and Maryland joined the Big Ten conference on July 1, 2014. Saturday's championship marks the first-ever Big Ten Championship in which the Terps and Scarlet Knights are competing in.

Giameo and Tang Named All-Big Ten Second Team

  • This past week, senior Stephanie Giameo and senior Karen Tang were named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.
  • Giameo currently ranks ninth in the Big Ten and 41st in the nation on beam.
  • Tang currently ranks ninth in the Big Ten and 38th nationally on bars.
  • The honors mark the GymTerps' first All-Big Ten recognition as members of the conference.

Walters Wows On Senior Day

  • Heading into the final performance of the meet on March 8, the Terps needed a 9.950 on floor to break 196.000. Senior Ebony Walters came through, giving the performance of her life, and earning a 9.950.
  • The score marks a personal-best for Walters on the rotation and the sixth-best score in program history.

Vaulting to the Top

  • The GymTerps rank 20th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten on vault. The team recorded a season-high team score of 49.150 vs. Iowa (1/30) and TWU (3/1).

Nelligan Reaches 100 Career Wins

  • With the GymTerps' two victories over Texas Woman's University and Brown, head coach Brett Nelligan reached 100 career wins at the helm of the GymTerps.
