ANN ARBOR, Mich.— In its inaugural Big Ten season the Maryland gymnastics team recorded a season-high team total of 196.075 en route to a seventh place finish in the Big Ten Championships. The Terps finished second in the morning session and seventh overall.
With the tally, the Terps clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament, placing in the top 36 teams nationally, for the seventh consecutive season.
Both Abbie Epperson and Karen Tang tied for fifth on vault and bars, respectively. Additionally, Karen Tang was named to the All-Big Ten Championships Team for her performance on Saturday.
“I am so proud of this team today. They were magical tonight,” head coach Brett Nelligan said after the meet. “Everyone stepped up in our biggest meet of the season. We are really hitting our stride at the right time of the season.”
Maryland opened the meet on floor, recording a 48.950. Ebony Walters (9.825) led the way, while Shannon Skochko (9.800) and Kathy Tang (9.800) followed shortly behind. Skochko's score marks a new personal-best on the event for the senior. Stephanie Giameo (9.775) and Dominiquea Trotter (9.750) also counted scores.
The Terrapins moved to the vault in the second rotation, scoring the second-highest team total of the season with a 49.100. Freshman Abbie Epperson (9.900) posted a huge score, while setting a personal-best. Kathy Tang (9.850), Skochko (9.800), Trotter (9.800) and Leah Slobodin (9.750) counted scores as well.
On bars, the third rotation, the Terrapins racked a 49.000 marking the team's second-best score this season. Karen Tang (9.900) headed up the Terps with Kathy Tang (9.825) following close behind. Epperson and Evelyn Nee contributed a pair of 9.800, while Nikola Chung added a 9.675.
In the final rotation, Maryland moved to beam (49.025) where the team recorded its highest team score of the season. Slobodin (9.850), with a career-best, and Giameo (9.800) led the way for the Terrapins. Additionally Sarah Faller (9.800), Trotter (9.800) and Skochko (9.775) contributed counted scores.
Michigan (197.825) won the championship, while Illinois (197.350) finished second and Nebraska (196.875) finished third. Penn State (196.725) placed fourth, Iowa (196.500) placed fifth, while Minnesota (196.450) came in sixth. Michigan State (195.650), Ohio State (195.250), Rutgers (193.125) rounded out the championships, finishing eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively.
