WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Sophomore right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn earned his 21st career win to break the Maryland all-time career wins record as the No. 20 Maryland baseball team topped Purdue, 10-3, in game one of a doubleheader at Alexander Field Friday night.
The Terrapins (28-13) backed up Shawaryn with an offensive explosion, plating 12 runs on 14 hits. The Carneys Point, N.J., native struck out 10 over seven innings and did not walk a batter.
Maryland took the lead in the top of the first. After junior LaMonte Wade walked, junior Kevin Martir hit a two-run homer to left field to give the Terps a 2-0 lead.
In the third, freshman Kevin Smith smashed a shot into left for his fourth home run of the season. The fourth inning saw junior Jose Cuas single before advancing to second on a passed ball. Senior Tim Lewis then singled to put the Terps up 4-0.
The Terps blew the game open in the fifth. Wade doubled to right before Smith singled to center to plate the junior. After sophomore Brandon Lowe singled, Martir drove in Smith with a single of is own.
Junior Anthony Papio followed with a walk before Cuas came through with a two-RBI single to put the Terps up 8-0 after five innings.
Shawaryn, the reigning NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, was dominant over his seven innings of work. The sophomore retired the first six batters of the game and allowed just four hits. He has not given up a run in his last 20 innings of work.
The Terps added another run in the seventh. Martir doubled to left cener before scoring on a Papio single. Lowe's double in the eighth plated Patrick Hisle to put Maryland up 10-0
After Purdue put up three runs in the ninth, freshman Willie Rios' first career hit, a double, plated to runs to make the score 12-3. Freshman Brian Shaffer finished the game for Maryland in the ninth.
Shawaryn's 21 wins are the most career victories for any sophomore in the country. He has now struck out 92 batters, good enough for tops in the Big Ten.
Game Two
Junior Robert Galligan struck out ten and junior Kevin Martir added three hits for the second consecutive game as Maryland defeated Purdue, 7-3, to take the night cap at Alexander Field.
The Terps went in front in the first. Purdue starter Joe Eichmann walked the first three batters before Martir slapped a two-RBI single to left field to put Maryland up 2-0.
After Purdue tied the game on a two-run homer in the bottom half of the first, Maryland scored three runs in the third. Jose Cuas slammed a triple into the gap in right center to plate Brandon Lowe and Anthony Papio. Cuas then scored on a failed pickoff attempt to make it 5-2.
Galligan settled down after the first and ended up with a career high 10 strikeouts. Purdue plated its only other run on Alex Robinson in the eighth. In the top half of that frame, a Kevin Smith RBI double gave the Terps their sixth run.
In the ninth, Martir scored on an error to give the Terps an insurance run. Kevin Mooney finished the game in the ninth.
Maryland returns to action at noon Sunday against the Boilermakers.
