COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Nick Cieri's two-run double in the first inning proved to be the difference as Team Martir defeated Team Papio in game one of Maryland's 2016 Fall World Series Friday evening.
Redshirt junior right-hander Ryan Selmer picked up the win, tossing two and one third of an inning and striking out four without allowing a walk.
Team Martir struck in the opening frame. After junior Kevin Smith opened the game with a single and senior Madison Nickens walked, Cieri ripped a double down the right field line to plate a pair.
Nickens, who reached base three times and scored twice, was at the center of things in the fifth. After a single, Nickens stole second and then scored on a failed pickoff from Truman Thomas.
Team Papio had its chances throughout, with seven hits and three walks, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left runners on base in for different innings. Sophomore Nick Dunn lined out with two on in the sixth to end the game.
The Fall World Series continues Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at Bob “Turtle Smith Stadium.
