Terps Fall at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Freshman Nick Dunn notched four hits and an RBI, but the Maryland baseball team dropped its midweek contest with Delaware, 12-7, at Bob Hannah Stadium Tuesday night.

The Terrapins (3-4) racked up their seven runs on 15 hits, but were unable to hold the Blue Hen bats in check. Sophomore Kevin Biondic racked up three hits and a pair of runs scored.

Maryland opened the scoring in the first. Sophomore Kevin Smith knocked a single into right field before junior Madison Nickens blasted a two-run home run to straightaway center to give the Terps a 2-0 lead. It was Nickens second home run in as many games and his third of the year.

The Blue Hens responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a two-run homer by Diaz Nardo. The Terps retook the lead in the second, when freshman Marty Costes doubled to the left-centerfield gap to plate Biondic. The double was Costes' first collegiate hit.

Delaware took control of the game with runs in four consecutive innings, including a five-run sixth that made the score 10-4.

The Terps cut the deficit with three runs in the seventh. Biondic doubled to left field before Costes was hit by a pitch. Freshman AJ Lee then notched his first collegiate his with a double that hoped over the third baseman and into left field. That base knock scored Biondic.

After Smith struck out swinging, Nickens singled to right to bring home Costes. Dunn then notched his fourth hit of the game with a single through the right side that plated Lee to make the score 10-7.

Delaware tacked on a pair of insurance in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Dunn's four-hit game was Maryland's first since LaMonte Wade had four against Ohio State on May 8, 2015. He now holds a team-high .370 average. Eight of Maryland's nine starters recorded a hit.

Maryland returns to action this Friday against Tennessee at the Keith LeClair Classic. Action is scheduled to begin at noon in Greenville, N.C.
