ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior Kathy Tang of the Maryland gymnastics teams was named Second Team All-Big Ten, as announced by the conference Monday.
“Kathy is having a great senior year, I couldn't be more proud of her,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “She's really put in the training day in and day out, and this honor really validates her hard work.”
The All-Conference teams are determined by regional qualifying scores. First Team honors were awarded to gymnasts who finish with a top-five RQS in the conference on any apparatus. Second team honors were awarded to competitors who ranked fifth through 10th in the conference in any event.
Tang ranks eight in the Big Ten with a 9.795 RQS on vault. She is 15th in the conference on floor with a 9.791 average score. Tang has been on a hot streak recently, recording 9.850s on vault in the last two meets and tying her career high with a 9.900 against New Hampshire on Feb. 26.
Tang is the third-ever All-Big Ten honoree for the Terps after Stephanie Giameo and Karen Tang were named to the second team last season.
Kathy Tang has been Maryland's leader this season, entering the rotation in every event and anchoring multiple rotations. She has earned a 9.800 or higher on floor in the last eight meets. After competing in the all-around for the first five meets of the season, she reentered the beam lineup and all-around competition in the B1G Five Meet last weekend.
The Terps are back in action this Saturday for the Big Ten Championships in Lincoln, Neb. Maryland will compete in the early session at noon against Rutgers, Iowa and Illinois on the Big Ten Network.
