OMAHA, Neb. – The sixth-seeded Maryland baseball team's run at Big Ten Tournament ended with an 11-0 loss to eighth-seeded Iowa at TD Ameritrade Park Saturday.
The Terrapins (30-27) fell victim to a pair of multi-run Iowa innings, a three-run fourth and a five-run eighth. Junior Nick Cieri led the Terps at the plate with a pair of hits.
Maryland threatened in the opening few frames, but were unable to plate any runs off Iowa starter Shane Ritter. In the first, freshman Nick Dunn walked with two outs before moving to third on a Cieri single. Sophomore Kevin Smith flied out to end the threat.
The second inning saw sophomore Justin Morris advance to scoring position with two outs, but Kevin Biondic struck out to end the frame. The Terps put leadoff batters on in the third, fourth and sixth, but could plate a run.
Iowa chased Maryland starter Hunter Parsons in the fourth with three runs. After consecutive walks with one out, a pair of singles and a sac fly provided the Hawkeyes with a three-spot.
The Hawkeyes extended their lead with five runs in the eighth, with a Joel Booker double scoring two runs. Iowa added three more in the ninth.
With 30 wins this season, Szefc is the only head coach in Maryland history to win 30 games in four consecutive seasons.
Maryland will await its NCAA Tournament fate Monday morning.
