Akli Advances to Final Eight at ITA Atlantic Regional

BLACKBURG, Va. – Maryland freshman Ayana Akli advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Atlantic Regionals this weekend at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Akli opened the tournament with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Noumea Witmus of VCU before topping Penn State's Frederikke Svarre, 6-2, 6-3. The freshman made her way to the quarterfinals after taking out Yulia Starodubsteva of Old Dominion, 6-4, 7-6 to make it to the quarterfinals.

Akli dropped a three-setter in the final eight, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 to top seeded Paola Delgado of VCU.
In doubles, Akli and Kate Yemelyanenka advanced to the round of 16 and Yemelyanenka qualified for the main draw in singles. Chloe Hamlin also picked up a singles win.

Maryland finishes out its fall season at The Roberta Alison Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend.
