COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Rivalry Trophy, which is presented annually to the winner of the Maryland-Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse regular season game, will be on the line twice during the 2021 season it was announced today. The trophy debuted in 2015 and has been awarded five times to-date.
Â
The unique Big Ten scheduling model for the 2021 season has each of the six men's lacrosse-playing schools competing twice against the other five in a home-and-home series. The first of the two scheduled Maryland-Johns Hopkins games will take place on Saturday, March 6 at Maryland Stadium; the second game date will be announced in the near future by the Big Ten.
Â
Representatives of both schools considered several options on how to manage the awarding of the trophy during the 2021 season and ultimately agreed that presenting it to the winning team at both games was the appropriate way to proceed.
Â
This week's game will be sixth time the trophy will be on the line when the teams meet. Maryland has won three of the five games in which the trophy has been awarded with wins in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Johns Hopkins won the inaugural Rivalry Trophy game in 2015 and currently possesses the trophy after scoring a 16-11 victory in the last regular season meeting between the two teams in 2019.
