COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland wrestling team won one bout in a 40-2 defeat to the No. 4 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon inside the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The Terps were docked a team point during the 197-pound bout for control of the mat.
No. 32 ranked 197-pounder
Jaron Smith was down late in regulation to No. 6 Patrick Brucki, but the senior scored a late takedown to force sudden victory. In the extra session, Smith exploded through his opponent, sending him down to the mat for a bout-clinching takedown, giving the Terps its lone victory on the day.
At 149-pounds
Michael North relentlessly battled Pat Nolan. After surrendering the first two takedowns of the bout, North rallied back but would ultimately fall due to Nolan's riding time advantage.
No. 12
Kyle Cochran faced one of the toughest wrestlers in the world, No. 2 ranked 184-pounder, and 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, Myles Amine. Cochran stood tough, but ultimately fell 6-2.
Several Terps also competed at the Mat-Town Open, hosted by Lock Haven University, on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt freshmen
Ethen Miller and
Jaxon Smith both took home titles while
Jackson Cockrell and
Jordan Gabriel finished fourth on the podium.
