Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland baseball scored seven runs on one hit in the first inning as it breezed by Georgetown, 14-5, on Tuesday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Terps continued their scoring onslaught by setting a season-high for runs. In two home games this season, Maryland has scored a combined 27 runs.
Maryland's (6-2) first eight batters reached base safely and it was the second time this season that the Terps scored six or more runs in the opening inning. Three Terps homered in the game to build an insurmountable lead.
Kevin Keister smashed his first home run of the season in the second inning to extend Maryland's lead. It was a two-run shot and the senior finished with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Sam Hojnar added a solo home run, his second of the season, an inning later. He finished 2-4 and scored three runs, tying his career-best mark.
Alex Calarco joined the trio, going yard in the eighth inning with a solo home run. He went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs. He also hit a two-run double in the first inning with bases loaded to open the large scoring run for the Terps. Leadoff batter
Eddie Hacopian finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Eight of nine of Maryland's starters scored a run, seven of nine had a hit, and seven of nine drove in a run in a well-rounded, total team effort.
Ryan Van Buren had a career day on the mound, pitching a career-high six innings and seven punch outs. The junior right-hander allowed five runs on six hits.
Duke McCarron took over for the remaining three innings, holding the Hoyas scoreless on the way to his first-career save.
Georgetown's (3-5) Jake Hyde homered twice in the contest and Owen Carapellotti hit a two-RBI triple to lead their team.
Breaking Down The Action
- Jake Hyde hit a solo home run for the Hoyas to start the game.
- The Terps capitalized on early struggles by Georgetown's freshman pitcher, loading the bases and walking in a run on the first 10 pitches to tie it up at 1-1. Following a Hoyas pitching change, Alex Calarco smacked a two-RBI double to left field to drive in Sam Hojnar and Chris Hacopian. Jacob Orr walked to reload the bases and Devin Russell was hit by a pitch to advance Kevin Keister for Maryland's fourth run of the inning. Elijah Lambros also drew a walk to score Calarco. Brayden Martin hit a sacrifice fly to score Orr for the first out in the top of the first inning. E. Hacopian took the batter's box for the second time in the inning and flew out to score Devin Russell, capping off Maryland's seven-run first inning.
- Ryan Van Buren continued Maryland's early dominance by retiring three straight Hoyas batters in the top of the second.
- Keister blasted a two-run homer to left-center with no outs in the bottom of the second, scoring C. Hacopian and lifting Maryland's lead to 9-1.
- Jake Hyde hit his second home run of the day in the top of the third for Georgetown's second run.
- Hojnar belted a solo homer over the center field wall in the bottom of the third for the Terps' tenth run of the game.
- Van Buren notched additional one-two-three innings in the top of the fourth and fifth.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Martin reached on a one-out walk before stealing second and touching third on a Georgetown error. E. Hacopian slapped an RBI single to drive in Martin and Hojnar followed with a single that moved Hacopian to third. C. Hacopian walked to load the bases, making way for Calarco to walk in E. Hacopian. Calarco then reached on a Georgetown error to score Hojnar and extend Maryland's advantage to 13-2.
- The Hoyas scored three runs in the top of the sixth on an Owen Carapellotti two-RBI triple and a Josh Rolling RBI double.
- Calarco added a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the eighth off of his former Northwestern teammate Ryan Keenan.
Swope's Take
"I felt like we were threatening the whole game," said head coach Matt Swope. "I thought we did a really good job of that, just staying consistent. We talk about being relentless for 27 outs, and I think we did that for 24 outs today."
Alex Calarco on His Offensive Approach and Swope's Advice
"I'm just trying to be balanced and efficient…and hit the ball hard," said junior DH Alex Calarco. "The big thing that Coach Swope talks about is process, staying completely process-oriented. As an offense, baseball is a game of failure, so you just have to stay with the process and continue to come in everyday and get your work in and try to get a good result. We're going to have some fun."
