ON YOUNG - Certainly the most heralded newcomer among the Terps signees ... Young earned every conceivable honor as a Virginian prep, including first team all-state ... he was a high honorable mention All- America by Street & Smith ... should find it easier than most freshmen to make the adjustment to college because of his extensive experience in AAU leagues and summer camp programs ... he played on the 1988 19 & Under Junior Olympic AAU National Championship Team ... that squad's roster reads like a who's who of future Division I stars with the likes of Alonzo Mourning and Milton Bell (both of Georgetown) and Bryant Stith (Virginia) listed as team members ... Young also traveled with that AAU team to Ireland, where it went 8-0 against teams from the Irish Pro League.
HIGH School Deep Creek High School ... Tidewater (Area) Player of the Year by the Virginian Pilot Ledger Star... he was a first team all-city, all-district, all-region and all-state selection, after averaging 24.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.4 blocks per game as a senior ... his first two years of high school he also competed in track and field, high jumping 6-7 as a sophomore before giving it up to concentrate on basketball ... he also was a sub-50 second 400-meter runner ... Young played at Deep Creek for Coach Harry Rest, who also coached former Maryland player Jo Jo Hunter as a schoolboy.
PERSONAL Born Dec. 5, 1971 ... Young's full name is Curley Antoine Young ... according to Barry Jacobs, who publishes The Fan's Guide to ACC Basketball, he is the seventh Young to play in the ACC and the second to play at Maryland ... he is majoring in criminal justice ... during the fall testing drills, Young bench pressed 225 pounds and had a vertical jump of 32 inches — which tied him for third best on the team.
