ON KASOFF - One of only two seniors on the squad with any appreciable playing experience ... a former walk-on whose hard work and dedication earned him a scholarship in June '88 ... can play either guard spot, but is best suited for the off-guard position ... despite unconventional form, he possesses an accurate outside jump shot ... he will have to assume a portion of the leadership role this season, given the Terps roster includes seven first or second year players.
AS A JUNIOR Played in 15 ballgames — a career high ... got off to an auspicious start in his season debut against Maryland-Eastern Shore, scoring seven points, dishing for three assists and grabbing two rebounds in just eight minutes of court time ... he also had one steal and was perfect from the floor (2 for 2) in that game ... he also played a season-high eight minutes against No. 15 North Carolina State ... his 11 points last year tied his 1986-87 season total ... his total last season of six rebounds — three each on the offensive and defensive glass — tripled his previous career rebounding total ... despite his diminutive size, his hustle earns him appreciation from the Cole Field House faithful, who often take to chanting his name when he enters games.
AS A SOPHOMORE Played in six ball games and averaged just under a point a game ... was instrumental on Maryland's scout team ... scored a season-high two points against East Carolina and Arkansas ... action was limited late in the year when he suffered a broken hand.
AS A FRESHMAN Earned walk-on status, fulfilling his dream of playing for the Terps ... played in seven games, averaging 1.6 points an outing ... scored a career high seven points in the final home game of the season against Maryland Eastern Shore ... was three for five in that game, including a three-point goal.
HIGH SCHOOL Pikesville High School ... one of the top scorers in the history of Baltimore prep hoops ... led the state in scoring as a junior, averaging 28.7 a game ... averaged an impressive 24 points a game as a senior, when defenses were keyed to stop him ... selected all-metro by the Baltimore Sun ... he is the all-time leading scorer in PHS history with 1,614 career points ... his best game was a 46-point effort against Owing Mills ... as a first team All-America pick by the National Jewish Post & Opinion ... an outstanding all-around athlete ... he earned all-Baltimore County honors as a football quarterback and safety and as a lacrosse midfielder ... the quintessential student-athlete, winning both the school's Scholar-Athlete Award and Athlete of the Year trophy as a senior.
PERSONAL Born Jan. 9, 1968, in Baltimore ... enjoys water skiing, art and thoroughbred racing ... he has the team's second-best vertical jump at 32 1/2 inches ... he also bench pressed 250 pounds during the fall conditioning tests ... brother, Eddie, played football and basketball at Johns Hopkins ... Mitch is the godson of former Outland Trophy Winner and NFL Hall of Famer Jim Parker, whose son, Dave, currently plays football for the Terps ... Kasoff is majoring in consumer economics.
