ON MUSTAF - One of the country's best young big men, who has added weight and strength over the past year that should enable him to be a dominant inside force ... he is a likely candidate for all-conference honors ... at 6-10, 244 pounds, he is 19 pounds heavier than a year ago and his strength has shown a corresponding increase ... this fall, he bench pressed 300 pounds, approximately 120 more than his max bench a year ago ... always an excellent outside shooter for his size — he was four of 16 from three point range and a 10-foot baseline jumper was his signature shot a year ago — Mustaf now has the strength to battle opposing centers inside.
AS A FRESHMAN The most dominant freshman in the history of Maryland basketball ... he had the highest scoring average of any Terp freshman since first year players became eligible in 1972 ... his 14.3 points per game edged John Lucas' 14.2 a game average in 1972-73 for that honor ... played in 26 games, starting 25 and averaged 14.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and shot 52 percent from the field ... his rebounding average tied him with Tony Massenburg for the team-best total ... he scored in double figures 20 times and totaled 20 or more points in two games — back-to-back 24-point outings at Georgia Tech and against Clemson ... he was in double figures in rebounds six times ... he was the team's leading scorer six times and its leading rebounder 13 times (including games in which he tied for team-high honors) ... six times he posted double-doubles (double figures in points and rebounds in the same game) ... in the ACC, he was the leading freshman rebounder (fourth overall), leading freshman shot blocker (9th overall) and the third leading freshman scorer (ninth overall) ... it is no wonder then, that Mustaf was runner-up for ACC Rookie of the Year ... three times he was the conference's Rookie of the Week and he finished the year as an honorable mention selection on the All-ACC Team ... best game: a 16-point, 14-rebound, two block, one steal outing against Lamar ... he also had a 24-point, three rebound, three steal, 40-mmute performance at Georgia Tech, almost single-handedly keeping Maryland in the game ... he shot better than 60 percent from the floor in 16 games and made three point shots against South Carolina, North Carolina and in both games against Duke ... suffered a knee injury in practice prior to the final regular season game of the year and did not play in the team's final three outings ... underwent arthroscopic surgery on the knee after the season.
HIGH SCHOOL DeMatha High School ... consensus prep All-America, gaining selection to the McDonald's Parade and Converse teams, among other ... named Metropolitan Player of the Year by the Washington Post ... averaged 22 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks a game, leading renowned DeMatha High School to a 30-3 and the Washington city title ... also had an excellent junior season, averaging 16 points, 14 boards and four blocks per game ... DeMatha was ranked No. 1 in the state each of the past three years ... played varsity ball all four years.
PERSONAL Born Oct. 28, 1969 in Whiteville, N.C. ... enjoys reading, especially about black history and current events ... he is one of only two Maryland players — Tony Massenburg is the other — with a 300-pound bench press ... he also has a 26 1/2-inch vertical jump ... Mustaf is majoring in management and consumer economics.
