ON MARTIN - A terrific natural athlete who should excel in Gary Williams fast-breaking style. Martin has jumping and rebounding ability that belie this size and his outside shot has improved considerably from a year ago ... he will be given a look as the Terps fifth starter at the off guard position, where his outstanding penetrating ability best can be utilized ... runs the floor well and will be a key player in Maryland's new full court pressing defense ... with increased work on his ball handling, he also will be able to shift to the point, providing Maryland increased flexibility in its depth-lacking backcourt.
AS A FRESHMAN Saw action in all but one game, averaging 7.8 minutes a contest ... averaged 2.8 points and 1.0 rebounds a game while seeing action at both guard positions ... best game of the year was at Clemson, where he scored 10 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished for two assists all in the first half ... he also scored in double figures at Virginia, when with starting point guard Greg Nared out with an injury, Martin played 1 5 minutes — one of his longest stints of the season — and finished with 10 points and an assist ... for the year, he was two of 15 from three-point range, but that total figures to increase this year as the players are given more offensive flexibility ... Martin is an aggressive rebounder, who finished the year with 29 boards, 14 on the offensive end.
