The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams are both in first place after the first day of competition at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. The No. 13 women are dominating with 461 points, leading second-place Connecticut (201). Richmond (193.5), West Chester (139) and Northeastern (117) round out the top five. The men have 380.5, leading second-place UConn (331) and third-place West Chester (258.5). William & Mary (134) and Old Dominion (66) round out the top five.
Senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley, winning the event with an NCAA 'A' cut time of 2:00.48. Freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.) won the 500-yard freestyle with a 'B' cut time of 4:47.91. Senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) finished second in the event and also earned a 'B' cut (4:49.45). Freshman diver Nicole Rose (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won the 1-meter board with a score of 271.85.
Other finalists for the women were sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) and freshman Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), who finished third, fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 500-free; junior Inbal Levavi (Kibutz Givat Haim, Israel) and Lavell, who finished third and seventh, respectively in the 200-IM; and senior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.), freshman Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.), Miller and senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.), who finished second through fifth, respectively, in the 50-free.
The Terp women also swept the relays, with the 200-free relay team of Knpper, Weir, Walter and Mulyayeva swimming a 'B' cut of 1:32.58 and the 400-medley relay of Knepper, Mulyayeva, freshman Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and Miller swimming an 'A' cut of 3:43.15.
On the men's side, senior Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) won the 500-free in 4:29.80 and junior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) finished second (4:31.51). Senior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.) beat out freshman Kevin Ford (Sinking Spring, Pa.) by .02 seconds to take the 50-free crown, and freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) won the 200-IM (1:50.12).
Other finalists for the men were senior Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.), who finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 500-free; senior E.J. Amyot (Fairport, N.Y.), who came in eighth in the 200-IM; Doyle and senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.), who finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 50-free; and freshmen divers Jason Eccleston (Reisterstown, Md.) and Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) who placed fifth and tied for seventh, respectively, on the 1-meter board.
The Terp men also swept the relays, with the 200-free relay team of Doyle, Ford, Fried and Weinberg winning in 1:22.68, and the 400-medley relay team of Weinberg, sophomore Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.), Ott and Ford winning in 3:23.04.
Action continues Friday, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
