HARRISONBURG, Va. -
The University of Maryland baseball team was held to one run thanks to a solid pitching performance by Justin Wood as the Terrapins dropped a 5-1 contest Wednesday afternoon at James Madison.
Maryland (1-4) had several baserunners in the top of the first inning and threatened to get to Wood early, but a Jensen Pupa double-play ball erased a leadoff walk and later Taylor Buran flew out with the bases loaded to end a potential rally.
The Dukes (3-3) manufactured a run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead against Terps starter Brett Harman. Alex Foltz drew a leadoff walk and stole second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of McKinnon Langston.
Harman retired the first two batters of the second inning, but then found trouble. Brett Garner doubled with two outs and then scored on an RBI single by Mike Fabiaschi. After a stolen base, Fabiaschi came around to score with two outs on an RBI single by David Herbek.
The Dukes tacked on an unearned run in the fourth inning and another sacrifice fly in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead, which proved to be more than enough against a Terps team that was limited to five base hits.
The Terps lone run came in the top of the seventh inning via an RBI double by senior Dan Benick.
Wood earned the win for James Madison, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing four hits. Harman took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the young season. Harman lasted four innings, allowing four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Catcher Mike Moss continued his hot start at the plate, delivering two of the Terps' five hits in the game.
Maryland returns home this weekend for a three-game series with Quinnipiac.
