Maryland and Florida State combined to hit seven home runs, however, four of them belonged to the Seminoles, including a grand slam, as the Terrapins' baseball team lost Sunday's series finale, 21-5, at Shipley Field.
Florida State swept all three games of the series to improve to 16-8 and 6-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland fell to 11-15 and 3-9 in the ACC.
The Seminoles jumped on Maryland starting pitcher Eric Potter in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk, shortstop Stephen Cardullo hit a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for a quick 2-0 Florida State advantage. Starting pitcher/designated hitter Mike McGee helped his own cause later in the inning, hitting an RBI double off the left-field wall.
Third baseman Stuart Tapley added a two-run shot in the second, McGee hit a solo shot in the third and Cardullo hit a grand slam in the seventh for the Seminoles.
Maryland hit three solo home runs in the game. Designated hitter Jensen Pupa hit one in the sixth, right fielder A.J. Casario hit one in the seventh and Mike Moss added another in the ninth.
The Terps added two more runs in the ninth on a Dan Benick RBI double and Matthew Murakami RBI single.
McGee went 3-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate and allowed only one run in six innings on the mound to get the win and improve to 2-1. Potter took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in two innings.
Benick and Murakami each went 2-for-4 to lead Maryland. Cardullo finished 3-for-5 with six RBIs for the Seminoles.
Maryland returns to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday at in-state rival Navy.
