Leading Off...
After splitting a pair of mid-week games, Maryland continues its 10-game homestand as No. 17 NC State comes to town. The Terps are in the midst of a stretch that will see them play 14 of 15 games at home, with the lone road game being a trip north to Towson on April 18. Maryland has a 10-3 record at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium this year.
Maryland will mix up its rotation this weekend after sticking to a pretty consistent formula the first seven weeks of the season. Brett Harman, who was the Friday-night starter in much of 2010, will reprise that role. Jimmy Reed will make the first start of his career after spending the first two and a half seasons pitching in relief. The lefty has been lights out this year, accumulating a 0.48 ERA in 13 appearances spanning 18 2/3 innings. A junior, Reed has 22 strikeouts to three walks and is holding opponents to a .161 batting average. David Carroll, coming off a win at Boston College in which he struck out seven in eight innings, will start on Sunday.
Freshman K.J. Hockaday continues to pace the Maryland offense with a .342 average that leads all ACC freshmen. Hockaday has a team-high 13 multi-hit games and has hit safely in 12 of the last 14. No one has been swinging a hotter bat for Maryland than Jordan Hagel, who has five multi-hit efforts in his last seven games and is now at a .330 average on the season. The junior has three four-hit games this year, including one vs. George Mason on Tuesday.
Six times this year a Maryland player has turned in a four or five-hit performance, which pales in comparison to 2011 when the Terps did that just once all year. In addition to Hagel's three, Kyle Convissar has one, Alfredo Rodriguez has one, and Korey Wacker had a five-hit game.
