EMERSON Ga. – Sophomore right-hander Mike Shawaryn notched a career-high 12 strikeouts over seven innings of work as the No. 12 Maryland baseball team took down Appalachian State, 4-2, at the Lake Point Complex Friday afternoon.
Junior Jose Cuas' three-run homer highlighted a third inning in which the Terrapins (6-1) did all of their offensive damage. That was enough for Shawaryn, who at one point retired 14 straight Mountaineers.
“When you play anybody on a Friday night it's going to be tough,” head coach John Szefc said. “You are going to get their best effort and their best arms. I thought we did a pretty good job.”
After a fairly uneventful opening couple of innings, the Terps got on the scoreboard in the third. Sophomore Brandon Lowe was hit by a pitch before advancing to third on a LaMonte Wade single. After Wade stole second, Cuas launched a 2-2 pitch from Jeffrey Springs over the left field fence for a three-run home run
The Terps added their final run of the game in the third after the home run. A Kevin Martir walk and Tim Lewis single preceded an Andrew Bechtold single that drove in Martir.
From there, Shawaryn went to work. The sophomore only found trouble in the sixth when Mountaineer catcher Zach Hummel hit a solo shot to open the inning. Shawaryn responded by striking out the side.
Shawaryn pitched a clean seventh to complete his day having given up just two hits and walking none. He improved to 3-0 on the season and leads the Big Ten in wins.
After Taylor Bloom pitched a spotless eighth, Appalachian State picked up a run in the ninth, but junior Robert Galligan finished off the contest to earn his first career save.
Wade continued his hot start with two hits to up his season average to .. The junior also added three stolen bases and has a team-high four this season.
Maryland returns to action tomorrow against the Mountaineers at 4 p.m. Tayler Stiles will be on the mound for the Terps.
