ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four members of the University of Maryland baseball team earned All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
Sophomore RHP Mike Shawaryn was a unanimous first team selection. Sophomore second baseman Brandon Lowe also earned first team honors while junior third baseman Jose Cuas made the second team. Junior catcher Kevin Martir was named to the third team.
Shawaryn, the Maryland all-time leader in career wins, has a Big Ten high 11 victories this season. Shawaryn also paces the conference in strikeouts with 115 and innings pitched with 96.1. He holds a 1.68 ERA.
The Carneys Point, N.J., native's 22 career wins are the most for any sophomore in the country. He was recently named to the USA Golden Spikes Award watch list and was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week four times this season.
Shawaryn accepted an invitation to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer. He is the second Terrapin to ever play for the United States.
Lowe paced the Terps offense from the leadoff spot and the three hole this season. He leads the conference in total bases (129), and is third in RBIs (51), slugging percentage (.589) and on-base percentage (.451).
The sophomore holds a .352 batting average and slammed nine home runs. Lowe was a USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list member earlier in the season.
Cuas' 11 home runs and 51 RBIs both rank third in the Big Ten. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is fifth in the conference in runs scored (49) and served as a steady presence on the hot corner throughout the year.
Martir, a Johnny Bench Award semifinalist, is in the top-15 in the conference in both slugging (.502) and OBP (.426). Martir's 41 RBIs ranked tenth in the Big Ten and he smacked seven home runs, good enough for ninth in the conference.
Junior left-handed pitcher Robert Galligan was selected as Maryland's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Fourth-seeded Maryland is set to battle fifth-seeded Michigan State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis. First pitch from Target Field is set for 10 p.m. ET and the contest will be show live on BTN.
