IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore Brian Shaffer tossed his second straight complete game to lead the Maryland baseball team past Iowa, 4-1, at Banks Field Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (11-12, 1-2 Big Ten) jumped on the Hawkeyes early with three runs in the top of the first. Shaffer cruised from there, tying his career high with seven strikeouts and needing just 90 pitches to complete his nine inning outing.
Maryland used five hits in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Madison Nickens ripped a one-out double before scoring on a Nick Dunn single. Back-to-back singles from Nick Cieri and Marty Costes brought home Dunn.
After a Kevin Biondic single loaded the bases, Anthony Papio plated Cieri with a sac fly to center.
The Terps added another run in the third. Costes walked with one out before heading to second on a Biondic single. Biondic was put out at second on a fielder's choice that saw Papio reach and Costes move to third. AJ Lee then singled to left to put the Terps up 4-0.
In the bottom half of the frame, Eric Schenck-Joblinske hit a solo shot to right to cut the Maryland lead to 4-1.
Shaffer was fantastic throughout, walking none and allowing just five hits. The solo home run was the only extra base hit let up by the sophomore and he sat the Hawkeyes down in order four times.
Shaffer lowered his ERA to 2.12 on the season and he has not walked a batter in consecutive starts. Maryland now has four complete games for the season after not having any last season.
Dunn's single in the first extended his reached base streak to 23 straight to start the season. Eight Terps notched hits, with Biondic and Justin Morris both notching two-hit games.
The Terps are back in action on Tuesday against VCU at 4 p.m., at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. Fans can watch the game live on BTN Plus or tune in to the Maryland Baseball Network.
